Freedom Farms Awarded $200,000 Through USDA Conservation Program

Freedom Farms has entered into its first major federally supported conservation agreement, securing up to $200,000 through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, commonly known as EQIP.

EQIP is administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture. Through the program, NRCS works directly with agricultural producers to plan and implement practices that improve soil health, protect natural resources, strengthen agricultural land and support long-term environmental stewardship.

The approved Freedom Farms agreement establishes a five-year conservation plan containing a series of defined practices to be completed across the property. As each practice is implemented according to NRCS standards and verified by the agency, Freedom Farms will become eligible for reimbursement up to the amount established in the agreement.

The five-year term provides flexibility in how the work is scheduled. Freedom Farms is not required to spread implementation evenly across all five years and may complete the approved practices sooner when operationally practical. This means the project could accelerate the work, complete a significant portion of the plan within the first several years and receive the associated reimbursements following verification.

Freedom Farms may also choose to invest beyond the reimbursement amounts when a more extensive implementation would better serve the property. The NRCS funding establishes the approved level of financial assistance, while Freedom Farms retains the ability to expand individual projects using its own resources.

The agreement represents the first conservation funding package fully awarded to Freedom Farms and an important milestone in the project’s development. It also establishes a foundation for continued collaboration with NRCS. As the farm identifies additional eligible conservation needs and practices, it may pursue future EQIP agreements and other USDA funding opportunities.

The NRCS Caribbean team has been an exceptional partner throughout the planning and approval process. Its representatives have been responsive, knowledgeable and strongly supportive of the broader Freedom Farms vision. The team has also expressed appreciation for the farm’s existing conservation philosophy and the sustainable agriculture experience of Farm Manager Nikola Spassov, including his previous work developing conservation and food forest projects in Puerto Rico.

Implementation of the plan is now beginning. Freedom Farms has already started soil testing and other preliminary work needed to establish baseline conditions, prepare implementation plans and move the first approved practices forward.

This award marks more than the beginning of a single conservation project. It represents the start of a larger agency funding strategy designed to pair private investment with public conservation programs. By working with NRCS and other agricultural partners, Freedom Farms intends to improve the health and productivity of its land while developing a long-term model for regenerative and sustainable agriculture in Puerto Rico.
